Cairns PADI Learn to Dive Course

Cairns PADI Learn to Dive courses provided by Pro Dive Cairns

PADI Open Water Diver is the world’s most popular scuba course: millions of people worldwide hold this certification and it is offered in as a five (5) day program.

PADI stands for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and is committed to providing training and experience to people wanting to learn scuba diving in a safe environment.  The PADI Open Water Diver certification is a full entry certification to scuba diving, qualifying you to:

  • Dive independently while applying the knowledge and skills you learn in this course, within the limits of your training and experience.
  • Procure air fills, scuba equipment and other services.
  • Plan, conduct and log open water no stop (no decompression) dives, when equipped properly and accompanied by a buddy in conditions with which you have training and/or experience.
  • Continue your diver training with a speciality dive in the PADI Advanced Open Water program, and/or in PADI Speciality Courses.

Pro Dive Cairns have been teaching PADI Open Water Diver courses on the Great Barrier Reef for over 25 years.  In 2008 they made PADI history, graduating their 100,000th PADI certified diver, so you know you are in well qualified and experienced hands. Locally owned and operated Pro Dive Cairns pride themselves on maintaining the best standards of quality, safety, value and professionalism. They are a PADI 5 Star accredited Training and Instructor Development Centre: their facilities are conveniently located on Spence St in Cairns city.

Pro Dive Cairns PADI five (5) day Open Water Diver Course includes two days in Cairns, learning theory and basic skills in their three air-conditioned classrooms and 4m deep, heated training pool.  Their experienced PADI Dive Instructors are passionate about scuba diving and the Great Barrier Reef, providing the very best training and customer service.

PADI Manuals are included in the course and come with a front page warning: Contents may lead to high levels of excitement and adventure.  Not intended for those who still rely on their floaties or for channel surfing couch commanders.

All equipment is included in the course cost, but for those who want to purchase their own dive mask, snorkel etc, then a quick trip to the Pro Dive Cairns Retail Store is highly recommended and included in the course.

Day three of the Pro Dive Cairns PADI Open Water Diver Course sees see you board one of their three Scubapro dive vessels to head out to the Great Barrier Reef, for a two day live aboard experience.  Licensed to visit 16 different dive sites, Pro Dive Cairns will select the best ones to maximise your experience and introduce you to scuba diving on coral reefs.

The first four dives are a part of your certification and supervised by your PADI Dive Instructor.  Once in the water, you will test skills already practiced in the pool in Cairns, including but not limited to: regulator retrieval and clear; mask clearance underwater; underwater compass navigation; alternate air source use (in case of emergency); and tired diver tow. Once you have demonstrated adequate skills and knowledge, your PADI certification is complete and signed off by the instructor, you can now enjoy diving with your buddy, as a PADI Open Water certified diver.

When I undertook the Pro Dive Cairns PADI Open Water Diver course, I enjoyed four training dives, followed by four certified dives, including a night dive and deep water dive, on the Great Barrier Reef’s Flynn Reef.  It was simply amazing, swimming underwater with stingrays, hovering over the soft anemone with their resident clown fish family and admiring the grace and beauty of the marine turtles, as they moved through their own underwater world, which I felt privileged to share.

Scuba diving is definitely so much better and just MORE than simply snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef.  Although most dives did not need to go deeper than 15m, you could spend time down there, watching the ebb and flow of the current reflected in the waving movement of the soft corals, mesmerised by the diversity of the Great Barrier Reef fish, their colours, sizes, shapes and agility.  You feel close to nature, at one with it.

Scuba diving opens the door to a whole new world: the underwater world.  A world that you used to swim above, looking down and admiring the life below, a world that you can now enter and explore, being at home with the fish, corals and turtles.

Sustainable Scuba Diving – Protecting the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is world heritage listed as a natural site.  It is protected for its natural, aesthetic and scientific value to humanity.  When learning to dive the Great Barrier Reef, you should choose an operator that has appropriate environmental certifications, to ensure you limit your footprint on this precious natural site.

Pro Dive Cairns has Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation through Ecotourism Australia and is a Project AWARE Go ECO Operator with PADI.  Committed to the preservation of the Great Barrier Reef marine environment, Pro Dive Cairns educate their scuba diving guests about the values of the reef and how best to protect it whilst diving.
