I have decided to take the next step and become a certified diver. I have booked a 4 Day SSI Cairns Learn to Dive Open Water Course with Cairns Dive Centre.
DAY 1: Basic Training
Arriving on the first day I was greeted by the friendly, professional staff and introduced to our SSI dive instructor, Dan Morrissey. Cairns Dive Centre starts its SSI Learn to Dive Open Water courses every day and after I was introduced to the two other keen students and completed our preliminary paperwork, we were transferred to the Cairns Dive Centre training facility on Sheridan Street.

Cairns Dive Centre provides professional, affordable and most of all enjoyable, scuba diving trips to the Great Barrier Reef. We recently spent two days and one night aboard their MV Kangaroo Explorer liveaboard vessel, with six certified scuba dives including a night dive on Milln Reef.
This amazing value for money package included transfers to and from Cairns, air-conditioned cabin accommodation, all meals, dive equipment, professional crew and dive briefings. The dive sites at Thetford and Milln Reefs were excellent, showcasing the very best of the Great Barrier Reef.
After completing an introductory scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef with Passions of Paradise, I was hooked! Time to take it to the next step and become a certified diver. To participate in a learn to dive course, you must first pass a Dive Medical test. This is a legal requirement in Australia and is for your safety. Some medical conditions prevent you from passing a Dive Medical, such as asthma, but I do not have any of these so went ahead and booked my appointment with the Cairns Tourist and Local Medical Services, located in the Cairns Corporate Tower on Lake Street. Despite feeling fine and fit, I was a little concerned that for some reason I would not pass the medical and my dreams of becoming a certified diver would be crushed.

It’s nearly Christmas in Cairns and on the Great Barrier Reef, the natural decorations provided by colourful corals, vibrant fish and the aptly named Christmas Tree Worm, create the perfect setting for tropical, festive fun.
Yesterday, we enjoyed an amazing day of December diving with Passions of Paradise. The warm waters of the Coral Sea were crystal clear and so blue it nearly hurt your eyes, visibility was excellent and beneath the surface was a whole new world to explore.
Yesterday we had the opportunity to travel from Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef with Passions of Paradise. I have never dived before and had planned to snorkel on the reef and take a glass bottom boat ride.
Passions of Paradise travels to two reef locations, our first stop, Paradise Reef is located on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. On the journey there Lance, one of the friendly dive crew, convinced me to try an introductory dive; I have always loved being in the water and it seemed like a good idea.

Who said snorkelling the reef on a rainy day was a bad idea? ~ Yesterday we enjoyed a fantastic day tour aboard Ocean Freedom, despite the grey skies and patchy rain. Boarding the boat we were greeted by friendly staff, serving tea, coffee, fruit and pastries. When we arrived at Opulo Reef, the skies were still grey and some light drizzle made the glass bottom boat tour a little “wetter” than expected, but did not affect the visibility. Entering the water with fins, snorkel and mask we were amazed at the colours and type of coral.
